and This is why I have chosen to partake in a SEP in the United Kingdom
Life is too short for regrets, or for mundane, repetitive routines. This is why I am applying for a SEP. It provides the opportunity for a life-changing adventure and a chance to an enriching experience.
Immersing oneself completely in a whole different culture might initially appear intimidating, but I eagerly anticipate the challenges it would bring forth. The aforementioned cultural immersion would definitely not be possible for a traveller, for the opportunities of interaction with locals would regrettably be restricted to enquiries for directions or at best, small talk.
Granted, settling in would hardly be a breeze, but I constantly remind myself that one semester abroad is undoubtedly one of the best opportunities available to an undergraduate. It is a privilege afforded only to a select few, the chance to mingle with the best students in the world, to broaden my horizons and perspectives.
At the end of the day, employers look not only for graduates with the best results, but for those with value-added qualities. I know that a SEP stint will be able to provide for these marketable skills, such as increased confidence and ability to deal with difficult situations and unfamiliar surroundings.
Moreover, the valuable friendships to be forged in a foreign land could last for a lifetime, and the resulting international network could prove to be extremely rewarding in the years to come. Going on a SEP would also expose me to a different academic environment and way of instruction. This could come in really handy should I decide, in future, on an academic career path.
That said, to leave out the desire for having an absolutely wonderful time would be hypocritical. So many have mentioned that the time during their SEP was the best in their lives and I for sure, would not want to be left out. The lure of being able to sip tea along the sidewalks of Paris, pay a visit to the Louvre and the Vatican City, ride a gondola along the canals of Venice, or the chance to be a spectator at the Nou Camp, to name a few, is simply too great to resist.
For the above reasons, I have chosen to partake in a SEP in the United Kingdom. Its close proximity to the sights and sounds of Europe has no doubt helped influence my choice. Crucially, the UK is a vibrant, cosmopolitan society where the best minds gather. I believe its location and varsity culture will mould me not only as a successful student but more importantly, as an enthusiastic, effective and dynamic potential employee. and i am so excited to be going to the UK =)
