and This is why I have chosen to partake in a SEP in the United Kingdom

Life is too short for regrets, or for mundane, repetitive routines. This is why I am applying for a SEP. It provides the opportunity for a life-changing adventure and a chance to an enriching experience.
Immersing oneself completely in a whole different culture might initially appear intimidating, but I eagerly anticipate the challenges it would bring forth. The aforementioned cultural immersion would definitely not be possible for a traveller, for the opportunities of interaction with locals would regrettably be restricted to enquiries for directions or at best, small talk.
Granted, settling in would hardly be a breeze, but I constantly remind myself that one semester abroad is undoubtedly one of the best opportunities available to an undergraduate. It is a privilege afforded only to a select few, the chance to mingle with the best students in the world, to broaden my horizons and perspectives.
At the end of the day, employers look not only for graduates with the best results, but for those with value-added qualities. I know that a SEP stint will be able to provide for these marketable skills, such as increased confidence and ability to deal with difficult situations and unfamiliar surroundings.
Moreover, the valuable friendships to be forged in a foreign land could last for a lifetime, and the resulting international network could prove to be extremely rewarding in the years to come. Going on a SEP would also expose me to a different academic environment and way of instruction. This could come in really handy should I decide, in future, on an academic career path.
That said, to leave out the desire for having an absolutely wonderful time would be hypocritical. So many have mentioned that the time during their SEP was the best in their lives and I for sure, would not want to be left out. The lure of being able to sip tea along the sidewalks of Paris, pay a visit to the Louvre and the Vatican City, ride a gondola along the canals of Venice, or the chance to be a spectator at the Nou Camp, to name a few, is simply too great to resist.
For the above reasons, I have chosen to partake in a SEP in the United Kingdom. Its close proximity to the sights and sounds of Europe has no doubt helped influence my choice. Crucially, the UK is a vibrant, cosmopolitan society where the best minds gather. I believe its location and varsity culture will mould me not only as a successful student but more importantly, as an enthusiastic, effective and dynamic potential employee.

and i am so excited to be going to the UK =)

only 4 papers to go!!!

*sense my sarcasm please*

Understanding stats is in a few hours, and I'll ace it!!!

all that probability, distributions, sampling, monty hall, birthdays, playing cards, screenings, matching and crap's not gonna be a challenge for me!!

IF YOU think that spending too much time on the computer is bad for your grades - well, it is.

An American study by Ohio University has found that college students who used Facebook spent less time studying and scored lower grades than those who were not busy 'poking' their friends online.

Facebook users in the study of 219 undergraduates had grade point averages (GPAs) of between 3 and 3.5, while non-users had GPAs of between 3.5 and 4.

oh my... let's see how this sem goes..

I'm gonna need to start getting used to British units!

pounds, miles, feet etc.. Thank god for chem eng.. haha

I'm going to have to start saving up for the 6 months there!! well preliminary target is 25k for a really enjoyable experience.. i dn want to burden my parents too much so hopefully i can self finance.. rock! =) and i got a reply from my friend!!!

Hi Kenneth
It is great to hear from you again...

Birmingham Uni will be fantastic. As you probably are aware, its a traditional British university a couple of miles from the city centre, so it hopefully will not feel that different from Singapore (apart from the cold and the age of the buildings and infrastructure).
It is about 25 miles from Jo and I, so we should get plenty of opportunities to meet up. I know a year is a long time, but if you have any questions about Birmingham or getting things organised send me an e-mail and I will try to help.

best regards
....

DAMN EXCITED (understatement) =)

I Hate MPSH2A

IT1005 - MPSH2a
CM1501 - MPSH2a
PC1431 - MPSH2a

one more mod this sem in 2a.. omgzzzzz

all got owned...

i love MPSH6 (100% record)

CN1111
MLE1101
GEK1505

MPSH 1 is neutral.. MPSH2b ok la.. A- haha

hahahahahaha...

i think i'm gonna hate mpsh5 judging from today...

murphy's law....

the bright side? prob every1 is on my boat =)

Battle #2

Today, I'm so gonna own Fluid Mechanics!!! =)

turbines, pump, shaft, energy, viscosity, boundary layer, momentum, head loss, navier, cauchy, transport equation, kinematics, continuity etc...

Kiss My Ass!!!

=)

and oh did i mention, I'm going to Uni of Birmingham for SEP... Wootness... cant wait!

Fluids is haunting me..

cant believe we actually decided to go swimming the day before fluids.. haha.. but its was too good a weather to waste.. the past week was horrid.. impossible to swim in the evenings..

was intending to wind down after a relatively unproductive day revising fluids.. no such luck there..

went down, saw some workers assembling PIPES!! and there were those 90 deg bends! oh lord no!... all the K value energy/head loss and stuff came flooding back..

that wasnt all.. i kept wondering about the correlation between temperature and viscosity because i noticed that usually when the water is cooler, the resistance exp tends to increase.. and then there was this nagging thought about the boundary layer thickness surrounding my body, and how i could use a cylinder to approximate the shape.. rofl..

and about reynolds' number, whether the flow was laminar/turbulent/transition.. Laughs..

bleah.. fluid mechanics is everywhere!

actually, i like to learn about how engineering affects our lives.. how we apply all the knowledge to serve us better.. frankly, its only the exams i hate! =x

I saw the pirates trailer on tv and came across a really beautiful beach.. we work so hard, is it not just for paradise like these?

Oh and it all begins..

looking forward to the end already... 1 step at a time..

thermodynamics today.. okay i sorta screwed the mids so i'm so gonna make up for it today.. i think its all in the state of mind.. if you enter with the mindset that you're so gonna own the paper, then chances are you will..

I'm So Gonna Own Thermodynamics =)

haha.. sweetttttt....

residual, fugacity, activity, enthalpy, entropy, turbines, pumps, efficiency, engines, refrigerators, coefficients, reactions, equilibrium, partial molar, ideal gas, VDW and what have you.. Ready to get your asses kicked??? :P

ok yesterday i posted about probability and i won toto.. so today i'm posting on thermodynamics hoping lightning strikes twice... rofl... if this works, i'll do it for fluids and so on...

My life, in Pictures...

CLT, Correlation, Probability, Mutually exclusive..

I realised the correlation between the frequency of my blogging and the proximity to exams. Its a positive one.

I guess as it approaches, I get too bored and thus the probability that you see a new post increases. Yes I know I mentioned previously that I'm a busy man, but being busy and bored are not mutually exclusive events.

By the Central Limit Theorem, I guess its possible to chart the distributions of the posting frequency, since 600+ posts is greater than n=40. If I decide to input the values into matlab and create a normal probability plot, I'd probably get able to observe that it follows a normal distribution.

It should be apparent by now that I'm just trying to revise my stats with this post. Or that I'm just really really bored.

Exams start tomorrow.

Look at them. I saw that on cnbc this morning and I was wondering to myself. What is the possibility they have CAP 5? I think you could use Poisson to calculate, because its probably gonna be a really rare event.

Why are we studying to hard? Even if we were to do so day and night, would we appear on cnbc holding umbrellas in the rain?

Would we be churning out OSs or buying into railways? Light is at the end of the tunnel, and I'm out of it.

Isnt the music just SOO annoying?

Trust me, it affects me too.. But i've learnt to live with it, and maybe so should you..

I just press the mute button before i visit.. frankly, i myself feel music in blogs is so passe.. deal with it.. haha..

Top 3 Reasons why have i not removed it:

-I like the song.. because its from big bang.. yes the song does get really annoying after a while... 'our whole universe was in a hot dense state....'

-The mp3 file is hosted on tpjc.net.. and now, because the school is so cheapskate, past students no longer have access to the portal.. so for nostalgia purposes, the song remains..

-Removing it takes time and effort.. I'm a busy man..

Once in 50 years, wait, whats the standard deviation and the mean? Just so i can calculate the probabilty..

Deluge was a 'freak' event
Nov 21, 2009
By Amresh Gunasingham & Ang Yiying

THURSDAY'S deluge which submerged parts of Bukit Timah was a 'freak' event that occurs once in 50 years, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Yaacob Ibrahim said on Friday.

Businesses along East Coast suffering due to rain
By Valarie Tan

At Upper Seletar Reservoir, excess water was released into the sea by opening the tide gates.

Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Environment and Water Resources Minister, says: "You can't design for rainfall of this level, it is just too huge. The thing we can accept is that we can only design our canal of a certain size, and at the end of the day, we have to live with some of these occurrences which occur once in 50 years or so.

Time Flies. 50 years in a blink.

the rich poor divide..

look at the amount of friends vacationing this december.. everyone is just loaded..

isnt that the funny thing about us singaporeans? we scrimp and save, eat foodcourt, take public transport, etc, just for the goal of a holiday at the end of the year..

you know what's funnier? on holiday, we eat at foodcourts too, or just settle for cup noodles...

uniquely singaporeans...

famous amos pays $4.20 per hour.. i was waiting at the cashier earlier and casually asked the part-timer about it.. and of course, she said free cookies comes along as an incentive..

4.20 is... gulp... rather low isnt it? i'm not even going to bother to mention the slave labour at macs...

i teach tuition at $30 per hour. thats a whopping 500% increase.. (and i'm not even into 2 significant figures).. i guess parents could use this example to emphasize the importance of "studying hard".. $30/hr might seem decent, but trust me, i've seen better days..

how do i put this.. well let's just say, i'm not the average 22 yr old undergrad..

and yet, an educational is but one route life throws us.. nothing is to stop anyone from choosing another pathway to success..

think i'll leave it at that...

travelling back in time..

i feel like i live in the 60's... everytime it rains, i take containers to collect water from the ceiling... kinda like the way people did when they lived in attap/zinc sheet houses ..

lol.. its pathetic.. maybe thats one disadvantage of staying at the top floor.. we called the town council (and that was like 6 mths back?), they came, took some pics and since then, we've never heard from them. EVER.

guess they must really be busy figuring out how to solve the problem.. or they really just cant solve it.. i get that sometimes.. when i come across really tough problems (like those in FLUIDS!!!$#@%!#$*&@#$%#!$) , and i cant solve it, i just leave them aside.. this must be retribution.. lol..

of course i pray that no one else can solve them.. because in that way, the bell curve remains stagnant and doesnt shift to disadvantage me.. rolling on the floor laughing.

my mum uses email.. and the internet..

she can never distinguish between emails, and SPAM/SCAM mails.. she goes through every SINGLE one really, really carefully..

gullible. i saw her replying to what clearly looked like a scam mail and she insisted it wasnt because there was pictures showing winners and what have you.. she even tried to cover the screen so that i couldnt see what she was doing... =.=" i took over, googled the email address and showed her that it was a scam..

and she was skeptical.. of ME!! damn it this is unbelievable.............

yet another ark..

Come onnnnnn....... its so cliche...

The idea has been used to death in so many many many movies.. Remember evan almighty?

I would no doubt have to admit that the driving and flying was impressive, because i doubt i'd be able to get so lucky even in the arcade... well in another word, UNREALISTIC..

watching the mini subplot involving the animals made me cringe..

actually, what am i doing? i went to catch a movie 9 days before finals.. kinda insane but, exams only what! =)

I guess for me the take home message was how strong kinship is, esp a parent's love, and how people tend to only realise their regrets before they die, and more often than not, it's too late by then..

I HATE ORGANIC

memory, memory, memory. so void of the need for understanding. send in a robot and it'll regurgitate and get full marks.

open book would have been good, and they could tweak the format to include critical questions, instead of making us memorise pointless mechanisms which we probably will never use, or, if need be, would have this cool little invention called google to assist us.

whats the point, whats the point?

no more CM modules ever.

what is wrong with science anyway? withholding so many past year papers. the staffs must be really lazy to upload the papers..

We're all gods

Think about this way:

In the past, the ancients prayed to god for rain, for a bountiful harvest, etc.

If they were to look at us today, witness our ability to seed clouds and create rain, to create GM seeds so resistant, they would think us as gods.

So, who's to say we aren't gods?

Such is the power of humans, our ability to adapt and progress. The exponential growth of science.

All we need is faith and belief. Not in god, but it ourselves.

I guess that's the coolest take home message from Lost Symbol.

"The only difference between you and God is that you have forgotten you are divine."

1 day, 1 book

I finished dan brown's book in a day again!

Read in the papers about the horrible reading culture we have, and that spurred me to put down my stuff and start reading the book.

I think his style of writing is just simply alluring and it just keep me going on and on. This despite exams being 3 weeks away. Haha. As usual, the ending never ever, ever deals with physical treasure, only wise wise teachings which was kinda expected. LOL.

The twist was nice but really, he did dropped hints to pick up.

I remember clearly the anti-matter stuff in angels and demons. This time its how focused thoughts possess mass and the ability to change things. Makes me wonder if it could perhaps be possible or its just fictitious crap. The the sensory deprivation tank was cool.

Idk if the bible really has all the hidden teachings of ancient science, because if it does, I could start pouring through one soon, and the old testament. I need to google on that when i've the time. LOL.

"Google is not a synonym for research" - True, but I think that's what most of us do.

Idk about the others, but I communicate without wax. =)
